Based in Brussels and active in over a dozen countries, the European Institute of Peace (www.eip.org) is an independent organisation working collaboratively with the parties to the conflict, those who represent people suffering from insecurity or at risk of violence, as well as European decision-makers and the conflict prevention, resolution and mediation community.

We are looking for a Geospatial Analyst, Yemen (consultancy contract) to support our Climate and Environmental Peacemaking (CEPM) Programme. Working closely with the project team at EIP, the Geospatial Analyst will conduct a desk-based analysis of the status of surface and groundwater in Yemen (potentially including buffer zone or connected basins), in support of the Environmental Pathways for Reconciliation in Yemen project, including the following responsibilities and deliverables.
You will
- Conduct a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature and technical reports on Yemen's water resources, including reports from relevant local and international, and existing hydrogeological studies, water models, and groundwater assessments for major basins.
- Compile existing Earth Observation data and analys it to derive spatial information on groundwater and surface water, to understand the gap of water data, including regarding the approximation of groundwater zones and levels, as well as recharge and extraction trends; understanding the limitations of the assignment and methods.
- Integrate a spatial analysis of climate and environmental factors impacting water supply and use, including biogeophysical factors such as precipitation or evapotranspiration and human factors such as water demand from irrigated agriculture and household use.
- Evaluate of climate change impacts on groundwater recharge rates using historical and forecasted climate change scenario data.
Deliverables:
- Water status assessment report: Technical report (30 pages) covering all assessment components with executive summary, methodology, findings, analysis, recommendations, and bibliography.
- Database: A complete project or database containing the public/open spatial layers, satellite-derived products, and analysis results, including metadata.
- Thematic maps: Rendering high-quality maps relevant to the report, including but not limited to groundwater basins, groundwater depletion hotspots, surface water availability, climate trends, conflict impacts, water stress index, water infrastructure locations, or basin-level assessments.
Your skills and experience
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in geography, hydrology, environmental or or climate sciences, or another relevant discipline.
- 5 years of relevant professional experience of geospatial analyses with focus on natural resources, environment or climate issues in relation to peace and security.
- Experience analysing the political, conflict and environmental context in Yemen is a requirement.
- Experience assessing water security in the Middle East region is a requirement.
- Demonstrated expertise in Earth Observation and remote sensing data processing and analysis with open tools and methodologies such as QGIS and OSINT.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is considered a strong asset.
- Excellent research and analytical skills, rigorous and critical mindset. Analytical thinking, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team, operate effectively under pressure and comply with deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from different backgrounds and cultures, strong interpersonal skills.
What we are offering
Home based consultancy contract from April until July 2026. No travel required.
